I had already done the graph, row count and crocheted it. However the graph was lost so I then recreated it again that one follows this one as the next pattern with graph intact.)
Directions:
Chain 102, you will be crocheting this in afghan stitch.
Rows
1: The easiest way I found is to use the back loop that runs along bottom of chain. This gives a nice finish to the piece. Skip the first two loops. You are going to draw up loops onto the hook leaving them on until the last loop is on the hook. You then will yarn over and pull through the first loop only. Yarn over again and pull through the next two loops, repeat this to the end leaving one loop on the hook. To do this you will draw up a loop through the bar and continue through both loops, repeating across to the end, ending with a slip stitch to tie it off. Weave in threads.

Hint: I found that if you carry more than two stitches you wind up with a loop on the back of the piece. To avoid this you can weave it in as you crochet. When you are taking on the loops for the forward run, take the second thread and go under it (this is the one you are carrying) then the next stitch go over the top of it, (basically between the carried thread and the thread you are drawing up). It produces a weave in and out of your piece. You can then cut the threads as needed.
Since I don’t have the graph any longer and it is going to be too time consuming to reduplicate, the row count is all that is available.

12 inch Pentacle to knit

12 Inch Square Knitted Pentacle, by Jane Wynn © 2008

for personal use only
Size 8 knitting needles
About 4 oz yarn of choice

Cast on 55 stitches.
Row 1-5. All white areas are done in Aran in the example. I don’t personally care for white as feel it’s too stark. You can always change the colors to suit your special hat.
I used Carons about 24 oz of Black, about 24 oz of Red Heart Aran, approximately 3 oz of the gold. These granny squares work up extremely fast.
I used a size H crochet hook, this resulted in a granny square that was about 3 inches. A G hook will result in square being around 2 ¼ inches.
My finished size without adding a border is 49 inches by 53.5 inches.
Total Squares needed:
Black 119
Black/aran 13
Gold 9
Gold/aran 2
Aran 241
Solid Granny Square
With Size H hook, ch 4, join with a sl st to first chain to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch1, (3dc in ring, ch1 ) three times, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in same ch 1 sp, ch 1 (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1) in remaining 3 ch 1 sps, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3, finish off, weave in loose ends.

Bi-color Granny
With size H hook, Ch4, with main color, join with a sl st to first chain to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 1, 3 dc in ring, drop main color but DO NOT CUT, pickup second color, YO draw through loop on hook, 3 dc in ring, ch1, 3 dc in ring, ch 1, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3.
Rnd 2: Turn, sl st in first ch 1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch 1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, drop second color, pick up main color again, YO draw through loop on hook, 3 dc in same ch 1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in last ch 1 sp, ch 1, join with sl st to top of beg ch 3, finish off, weave in loose ends.
Assembly
Using Tapestry needle and appropriate color yarn and whip stitching through the Back Loops Only. Assemble the squares using the grid below as reference.

Graph to put together can be found at this site, the entire pattern is downloaded as a pdf

http://www.box.net/shared/qjbip0ti97

Note: Sandra made me stop and realize the versatility of this. I know I’m going to embellish it a bit but she sent a little note about envisioning it as a multicolored hat with a spider hanging off the end. I like that so I’m going to give it a try sometime later this year to see how it would look. Thanks Sandra for a great idea.

Newsletters

This is one way for me to spread a little bit more about this newsletter.
